 Faak am See - Ferlach

Photo report - part 1

By Niek van Duijvenvoorde

In the summer holidays of 2005 I stayed in southern Austria in a federal state called Carinthia.

On the 28th of July a special steam train ride was organised. Normally this steam train would only go between Weizelsdorf and Ferlach -Ferlach is near the Loibl pass to Slovenia - , but on this day the train started at Faak am See and from there it went via Rosenbach to Weizelsdorf and ended eventualy in Ferlach. After a short break the train went the same route back to Faak am See.

Update 2007:

The special train went on three different lines which together are called the Karawanken railway.

The section Faak am See - Rosenbach is part of the westerly line Villach - Rosenbach

The section Rosenbach - Weizelsdorf is part of the easterly (and main) line Klagenfurt - Rosenbach - Jesenice

The line Weizelsdorf - Ferlach is a branch line of the easterly line.

Start: Villach main station. To get to Faak am See I have to take a regional train from Villach.

Picture 1: The single car diesel train, here in the centre of this picture at platform 2a at Villach Hbf, is the train I have to take to Faak am See.

Picture 2: I just arrived here at Faak am See station. This picture is taken in westerly direction (to Villach and Italy) and has a part of the railway yard of the station. As you can see it's a beautiful day.

This station is the starting point for the steam train to Ferlach (and back).

Picture 3: Of course I am not the only one who will take this special train. A lot of railway enthusiasts like me and families with children are waiting for the train to arrive. This picture has been taken form the same spot like picture 2, but now in easterly direction (to Rosenbach and Slovenia).

We are close to the three states point (Austria - Italy - Slovenia).

Picture 4: A sign on a catenary pole tells us where we are now.

Picture 5: On this picture you can see the station building of Faak am See.

I like the style of this building.

Picture 6 (left): But where is the steam train? It already seems to be delayed.

Picture 7 (below): With a whistle blow the train finally announces itself and enters the station.

Picture 8 and picture 9: Before we can leave the steam locomotive has to shunt. It has to go to the front of the train and that could take a while. Now I can take some pictures of this beautiful locomotive while it's still single. And of course I am not the only photographer.

After the steam locomotive has shunted and coupled back to the front of the train we can finally leave the station and head for Ferlach.

Picture 10 and picture 11: With full speed the train runs over the track, sometimes very close to the mountains. During the ride I tried to take some pictures of the train and the track. The hand on picture 11 belongs to someone I met (from England) during this trip.

Picture 12: There are a lot of corners in this railway line, so there are also a lot of moments to take pictures like this one.

Picture 13 (left): A pre signal can just be recognised in the smoke. This signal shows two yellow horizontal lights, which means that the next main signal will show yellow or red.

Picture 14 (below): The smoke makes the main signal with pre signal, which are a little to the left of the catenary pole, almost invisible. The main signal shows yellow and green, which means "pass the signal with restricted speed (40 km/h)". The pre signal shows two yellow lights. The image of the signals could be seen best on the enlargement (click on the picture).

Picture 15 and picture 16: With a big corner we enter the station of Rosenbach. The smoke makes the picture not very clear.

Picture 17: This picture speaks for itself

Picture 18, picture 19 and picture 20: Another electric locomotive (picture 18) is waiting on track 1, so we are standing on track 2. The shunting steam locomotive (picture 19 and picture 20) had to run on track 3. A good moment to make pictures.
